Madman Madoff

Or a Billion for One

Have you ever tried to get into someone’s mind; someone like an ax murderer, a suburban cannibal or a billion dollar ponzi schemer? I consider myself a sympathetic, understanding and compassionate person and I can appreciate the dark forces that turn someone into a horror for society. Into a person that does grievous harm to many people. Alas, despite my very best sympathetic efforts, these ax hacking, serial cannibals and hearth, home and retirement fund thieves elude my critical examination. I don’t get it. Where do these social psychopaths get their deviant behavior? Born, bred, both? My true sympathies and understanding go to the victims, their families and the humanity they have touched with their foul lives.

As far as ax and serial murderers go all we can assume as a civilized people is their nuts. Some brain construction, damage, upbringing or whatever has destroyed the natural human balance of right and wrong completly. They have become utterly self absorbed maniacs; other people are not real to them. They are the only reality they have. So they are insane, criminally insane.

So I ask you; should we put the suave and sophisticated billion dollar thieves in this category? Madoff ultimately did millions of times the greater harm. Should we assume that he saw only play toys for his amusement while causing the ruination of hundreds of thousands of people, worthy charitable organizations and powerful corporations? How could he be such a personable person yet destroy so many lives? Does one not have to have at least a modicum of humanity to act as and actually be such a grand philanthropist? Should we consider all the good works he did and took credit for with other people’s money? Should we consider his intellect and polished manners as a sign that he’s not just a crook?

Hell no! String the bastard up by his thumbs on the Manhattan Bridge. After stretching his thumbs for a few days they should rip off and he will become just another speed bump. A road kill.
